The last 4 shows have seen in excess of 130 horses show up for our little one-day shows. in each of these we have made slight improvements to the way we run the show, but we hope to make some leaping changes for August 29th. Most important it so be able to handle the rush of entries so that we can start on time.

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL IS TO GET AN ENTRY FORM TO US IN ADVANCE:

1. Click on the "Entry Form" link above, and print it out.
2. Fill it out CLEARLY IN BLOCK LETTERS.
3. Write "Advance Entry" on the top of the form.
4. Either fax or scan/e-mail to:

Thoughts and Prayers to Shelley Griffitts

As many of you may already know, Shelley Griffitts had a bad fall at the Harmon Hopeful show this past Saturday. She is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday the 21st, and at this point, we ask that you all please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

It has been asked that, should you want to send her a card, please do NOT send them to the hospital, but please do send them to her home address:

Meet My Friend Jaime

I would like to introduce you to Jaime Robertson who is a very good friend of mine. She is my neighbor and riding buddy. Jaime is a very talented artist who graduated from Converse College, my alma mater, with a degree in Art. She rode on the Converse Riding Team while she was there. She has recently studied with Pat Parrelli in Florida to further her knowledge and love of natural horsemanship. Jaime works as an artist for an interior designer doing murals and faux finishes in homes. She has her two horses at home with her. Her horse Raisin is so special and very smart. She showed me some of the things he would do for her. I was in awe! I wanted to have that type of communication! She has been teaching us about natural horsemanship, and it has made such a difference in our horses. Liza loves Jaime because she is always happy and such a joy to be around. Her attitude is contagious! It is not all about winning – it is about trust, relationship, and FUN! Jaime is a very talented artist! Her artwork is gorgeous! The most incredible thing about Jaime is that she is legally blind! I have to constantly remind myself of this fact because I forget it when I am with her! She is an inspiration to me and my family!

Jinks Jervey Page

I am sad about the loss of my old riding buddy - Jinks Jervey Page. Some of you may remember her. We rode with Jeanne Smith. Jinks, Jonathan Shoemaker and I were Jeanne's first junior riders. We rode back in the 80's. Jinks and I had two lessons a week together, carpooled to the barn, and raced in the peach orchards along Higway 11. She had her masters degree in counseling and did Equine Therapy up in Michigan where she lived with her husband and two small children. She died of cancer. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers!

We do have our regular four BRHJA orgainized shows at Harmon Field throughout the year. The great news, so I believe, is that we have PSJ sancioning for all four of these shows. We made the decision to hold the October Classic a week earlier this year for a variety of reasons. The net of that was that it will give PSJ time to calculate points from that show into their standings and get invitations out to those who would like to attend their medal finals.

So go take a look at the site for the show dates.

The 2008 BRHJA Banquet was a lovely evening!!! It is always a first class affair!

I would like to thank you for the awesome cooler, I will always be proud when one of my horses wears it ringside.

I am new to this whole Hunter Jumper world and have been so blessed to land in the Tryon area. I am privileged to show with Jeanne Smith, who has endured much angst with me, trying to find my way around course! I continually say that I am not interested in the supposed prestige of the “A”s …. besides……my friends are at Blue Ridge shows!!!! So, to receive the Sr. Sportsmanship award at this year’s banquet was such a surprise and honor! I am humbled and touched and appreciate it more than I can express. I will always try to live up to what it represents…that good rides, camaraderie and good sportsmanship are more important than winning!

Thank you, truly for all of your hard work and dedication to our horse show community. I know there are thousands of hours a year devoted to often unrecognized, thankless tasks. But through your efforts, BRHJA continues to grow and provide a terrific showing experience to us all. I will always treasure my hat of “many monograms”!

The Ask the Judge Clinic

I just want to make a comment about the "Ask the Judge" Clinic this past Friday at the Holiday Classic Show. Jim Zulia from Eustis, Fl and Steve Wall from Waukesha, WI were the judges. There were three hunter rounds ridden while the judges commented as they went around. It was very informative! The question and answer session was the best. I was so glad that Liza was there to learn and hear what they had to say. They were both very nice, personable, and insightful! The biggest thing that I went away with was when they said, "We are rooting for you! We want all of our scores to be in the 80's." That was nice to hear. They also seemed to emphasize consistent pace and rhythm! Small chips and swaps are not counted off as much as long as the rhythm doesn't change.

Thank you Lewis for having this clinic and thanks to Jim and Steve for giving us their perspective from the judges seat!

Two Greys Bring Classic Blue Home to Clearview

We may have had our Costume Class and out Hunt Team Challenge for entertainment, but we all know to fall back our clocks so we don't miss the Sunday morning action at the annual BRHJA Classic. It started at 8AM, and who can remember what time it ended, but it was owner rider Liza Goodlett and her Happy Go Lucky along with Jenna Watt's aboard Heidi Mendez' Joshua who took blue in the BRHJA Medal Finals. And it was also that two nearly identical greys bring these medals home to Clearview Farms. Congratulations to both of you, as there is proof that patience, diligent work, and a little bit of good horse, do pay off in the end! Congrats also to Jeanne and Nikki for having the medals come to your barn! Better start working now for next year!

The costume class was won in style by Courtney Clayton on Special Effects. Of course, I could have sworn there were two skeletons rounding the ring.

And to round out Saturday Evening we had four beautiful rounds in our Hunt Team Challenge, won in style by Freda Jessen commanding Captain Kangaroo, Anna ter Kuile atop Denise the Menace, and Laurel Godfrey on the Gentleman.

Just wanted to remind everyone that daylight savings time will occur during the Classic Horse Show - so don't forget to turn your clocks back an hour on Saturday night. You don't want your horse braided and you in the bed!!!

There was also a sanctioned show that had errantly been left off the list up until now, and it has been added. It was the SCHJA Medal Finals from December 1&2 in Camden. This same show has been put into October this year, the week before our Halloween Classic.

All shows are also unhidden. You will have to use your zoom to look at the whole sheet, but please help us make sure your points aren't incorrect so that we can get any and all mistakes cleared up before the end of the year!

Hello all –
Wow, the board is winding down with only one more show left. It is hard to believe that we are starting to focus on the banquet and year end prizes. This has been an incredible year, culminating with our most recent Summers End Show, which we suspect was the most highly attended show of all time at Harmon Field. None of this would have been possible without a lot of help from many volunteers over the past few years. We want to thank all of you for making our shows fun and full! Harmon Field is going to continue to be a busy place! 2009 is shaping up to be another exciting year with more shows offered close to home!

We are tooting our own horn a bit, but we want to let you all know about the accomplishments this year from our all volunteer Board of Directors. We have a wonderful new web site that is updated regularly and easy to use! The BRHJA BUZZ is our new blog to keep everyone up to date on any important information. It's a great way to stay informed and feel like a community!

The improvements to the facility include a new judges stand built for the TR&HC Ring, new footing in the Spencer Ring, a new announcers stand with the old judges stand, and a longing pad. We have worked hard as your board to improve the facility and provide wonderful shows. Without all of the exhibitors, sponsors and other volunteers we would not be able to continually improve Harmon Field.

We have an ambitious wish list for next year that will include leveling some of the stalls, fencing the schooling area, a road frontage fence, more shade trees, more bleachers, and improving the sprinkler systems.

We also would love to hear from you all. Please comment on this blog or email Ashley (agoodhorse@bellsouth.net) with any compliments, complaints, suggestions, etc. It is your field too and we want everyone to enjoy Harmon Field.

We are looking forward to our next BRHJA show at Harmon Field. It is the annual Classic Show where we all dress up, braid, and feel special!

It will be October 31, Nov 1 & 2.

Saturday is a regular show and will have the second annual Hunt Team class on Sat. night. There will also be a Costume Class for the little goblins and their mounts on Sat. night before the Hunt Team Class so start thinking about your costume. The board is planning a pizza party on Sat night for all of these activities.

Sunday is the Classic! All of the horses are braided and everyone dresses in their finest! Each jumping round will be scored and averaged together for the winners. This is a great honor to win a classic and money will be offered in all of these classes.

We would like to ask for $100 sponsoships in these Classic Divisions. This will help us to offer more prize money to all exhibitors. We need to know ASAP if you would like to sponsor a division so we can get your name in the prize list. Ashley and Robert Goodlett will sponsor the Children's Hunter Classic. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announces the winners of the 2008 Emerson Burr Horsemanship Awards sponsored by Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, along with the winner of the Buttons and Bows Sportsmanship Award and the winner of the Short Stop Perpetual Trophy. All of these special awards took place at the 2008 USEF National Pony Finals at the Kentucky Horse Park.With pony riders competing in each age division, the winners of the Emerson Burr Awards were Madeline Schaefer, of Westminster, MD, in the 8 years and under group; Meredith Sitze, of Raleigh, NC, in the 9-11 age group; Tess Vindischman, of Holly, MI, in the 12-14 age group and Arden Cone, of Landrum, SC, in the 15 years and up group.

The Emerson Burr program consisted of two tests— a written test and a hands-on horsemanship test. The young equestrians who score the highest on the written test moved on to the hands-on horsemanship test. Each winner receives a $500 monetary grant to further their education or offset equestrian-related costs.The Emerson Burr Horsemanship Awards Program was created in 2002 by friends and family of the late Emerson Burr to promote and perpetuate good horsemanship in younger equestrians.

The Buttons and Bows Sportsmanship Trophy went to Lillie Keenan, 11, of New York, NY. This trophy is awarded to the junior rider who best personifies the high standards and virtues of integrity, sportsmanship, honor courage, good temper and unselfishness during the USEF Pony Finals competition.The Short Stop Perpetual Trophy went to Elizabeth Solomon, 15, of Huntingdon Valley, PA, (Zone 2) who rode her chestnut Paint mare Hip-Hop. This award is given to the pony jumper rider who, in the opinion of the judges, exhibits the best style of riding through the Pony Jumper Championships.As the sponsor of the 2008 Emerson Burr Horsemanship Awards Program as well as the Official Equine Hospital of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital is a full-service equine hospital established in 1986 as a referral center for horses requiring specialized medical and surgical care.

Today Rood & Riddle is known and respected throughout the world for innovative and highly skilled treatment of horses. Rood and Riddle’s reputation stems from their unwavering commitment to quality, both in the care of horses and in their relationship with clients and community.

SCHJA Palmetto Finals Rescheduled and BRHJA Sanctioned

The SCHJA Palmetto Finals are now rescheduled to the weekend of October 25 and 26, to be held at Highfields in Aiken. As it doesn't conflict with any of our other shows, it is also now officially sanctioned by BRHJA as well as PSJ, PHSJ, PHJA, NCHJA, and of course by SCHJA. So in case you need to chase a few more points before our October BRHJA Classic.

Crystal Bohnen and Lincoln Russell from the Motlow Creek Equestrian Center gave an exhibition to students at Converse College in Spartanburg on Sept. 4, 2008. The riders showed off their horsemanship skills as well as made several jumps in the center of the school's quad area.

Converse is trying to get a riding club up and going for its students to enjoy at Motlow Creek Equestrian Center. Jennifer Holmes will be the head instructor for the Converse girls and Crystal will be the assistant. Jennifer was the coach of the equestrian team years ago when they competed as a team. Now she is back to try and get the ball rolling on a new riding program for Converse. Ashley Goodlett is an alumn of Converse and hopes this will take off and become a reality. Ashley wants to help the team with stable management classes, field trips, and keep them aware of fun horse activities around the area.

Motlow has several wonderful school horses for the girls to take lessons on or they can bring their own horses to live at Motlow while they are at school. Motlow is a short 30 minute drive from the College in Landrum, SC. Landrum is a very horsey place with horse farm after horse farm so the drive is easy and beautiful.

The BRHJA Non Showing Siblings deserve some praise for supporting their siblings who show at the show! For those siblings who are not that into horses – these shows can be a long day if they can not find another non showing child to play with.

Recently, my son Jakob (8) patiently watched his sister in all her events and as Nadia (10) came out of the gate after her last class he heard her trainer ( Linda McDaniel) comment to Nadia that she had a great run but “lost” her stirrups at the end– upon hearing that Jakob eagerly volunteered to go back into that ring and find them for her and Ms. Linda! What a sweet brother – if only we could go back after a class and “find” our stirrups when we “loose” them – that would be like a mulligan for horse shows!

SPENCER RING RE-FOOTED!!! NEW TR&HC RING JUDGE'S STAND STARTS CONSTRUCTION!!!

For those of you lucky enough to be showing at the Harmon Hopefuls show on July 12, you'll be showing in a newly rebuilt footing! Just one more thing that all of your BRHJA show dollars go towards!

You might also see some preliminary work being done on a new judges' stand being constructed for the TR&HC ring. This stand will be a similar design to the one already standing between the Spencer and Lehner Rings, just a bit smaller and with only one staircase, as only one judge needs to use it. Harmon Hopefuls money will pay for this!

We are also planning to relocate the current judge's booth at the TR&HC ring to a spot on site where it can be used as a dedicated announcer's stand. We're working on those details now, but the goal is to have it all in place for the August Summer End show!

Jeanette Collins has qualified for the EJ Haun Finals in Raleigh, NC in July, the ASPCA Maclay Regionals in Jacksonville, Fl in Sept., and the USEF Medals Finals in Harrisburg, Pa in Oct.
Jeanette has been showing in BRHJA shows since Short Stirrup on her pony "Sugar Cube". Then she moved up to a horse and into the Childrens with "I'm Allaroan" and then on to "Freeport" to begin the A shows in the Juniors and the 3'6" medals. Now, on her new horse "Copyright" Jeanette has qualified for the Equitation finals.

Congratuations Jeanette!!! We will be rooting for you to go all the way! Let us know your results.

I want to thank all the volunteers who came out for the Harmon Hopeful Saturday. It was miserably hot and everyone was a trooper! Without the volunteers putting on these types of shows, the five kids that came from our barn would not be able to get an opportunity to show. The BRHJA is looking forward to our next show at Harmon Field on August 22, 23, 24. We are featuring a $2500 Child/Adult Jumper Gambler's Choice and a $5000 Mini Prix at Level 5 all on Saturday Evening. All of our prize money is guaranteed!!! There will be a Ring Side Cook Out from Mt. View BBQ to benefit the Humane Society. Tot Goodwin will have a Terrier Trial demonstration for entertainment before the evening classes begin. So come out Saturday night for a wonderful evening! Remember to get your dinner wrist bands from the Farm House or email Ashley with your reservation - agoodhorse@bellsouth.net. Hello all -
The September Fall Festival at FENCE has been canceled. Lewis Pack will be taking that date and doing a show at Harmon Field called the "September Spectacular" September 12-14. There will be a $500 Hunt Teams class at the show and the winning team will get a free entry into the Hunt Teams at the Classic. This show will benefit the PACT Conservany program and they will be offering a silent auction to raise funds for them. That auction will also include a free ride in the Scott Hofstetter clinic that will be on Sunday the 14th. Scott Hofstetter will be judging as well and staying to do a clinic. People can email Lewis at harmonclassics@aol.com for more information. Scott will be doing 3 sessions on that Sunday, but if there is a enough interest Lewis will see if he can stay over for Monday as well. The Clinic will be $125 with a $25 audit fee. Anyone that participates in the clinic will get 2 free audits for anyone with them.

The FENCE Fall Classic that was scheduled for September 12-14 has been cancelled by FENCE.

Harmon Classics show originally scheduled for September 17-19 has been moved to September 12-14, and will still be held at Harmon Field.

The Harmon Hopeful show originally scheduled for September 13 is now scheduled for September 20th.

Two new Harmon Hopefuls shows have been added to the schedule, July 12th and August 16th. These two additions are special, as the proceeds will be donated to the St. Luke's Hospital Orthopedic Department, so we hope you will turn out in droves to these ones!

She brought 18 horses last year to the show so her presence was missed this year! She had a very good excuse for not being there though – she was coaching the Clemson Equestrian Riding Team in Califorinia!!! Katie is the coach of the Clemson Riding Team and is very proud of the team. The Clemson Equestrian Team competed at the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) Nationals May 8-10. Clemson had three individual riders compete in the three highest divisions at Nationals. All three finished in the Top Ten including an 8th place in the prestigious Cacchione Cup and a win in Open Over Fences. The win makes the Clemson Equestrian Team National Champions in the Open Over Fences Division. The three individuals competing for the team were Ashley Phillips in Intermediate; Charlotte Powers in the Cacchione Cup and Sarah Spainhour in Open. A team competes at regular season shows. Team members who earn enough points to qualify for a try to get to nationals first compete in the Regionals. At the Regionals, the rider must place among the top three riders in the region in their division. Then, they move on to the Zone competition. The top three riders from each region in the zone compete for the top two placings. If a rider is first or second in their division competing against the top riders in the zone, they go to nationals. Just getting to the national competition is difficult. The top ten riders in each division at the Nationals are recognized. The Cacchione Cup is a competition for the high point open rider of each region. There are 30 regions in the country. The class is run like the USEF Medal finals and is, in fact, recognized by the USEF. Clemson had the high point open rider in the region and represented Region II Zone V in the Cup. There are 24 members on the hunt seat show team and approximately 38 on the team all together. The kids raise their own money for lessons and to support the horses. The team's mean GPA is far above average. Most of the team members are high achievers in school (going on to vet school, med school, etc..). Also, one of our fundraisers this year is helping to put on a George Morris clinic at Garrison Arena (on campus) this winter right after GM returns from being the chef d'equipe at the Olympics.

This Weekend's Mother's Day Show

Mother Nature did not shine on us on Sunday for the Mother's Day Horse Show, but Saturday was just about perfect! Thank you all for coming and supporting this wonderful show! We will let you all know the total amount that is donated to the St. Lukes Mamography Department as soon as we know the totals. The dinner Saturday night was so delicious and it was the biggest crowd at Harmon Field that we have ever had! There were over 350 people for dinner and we had 18 entries in the Mini Prix. It was definately the biggest event we have ever served! We want everyone to know that the board has made the Spencer ring our next priority! We will be resurfacing that ring to make it as good as our wonderful TR&HC Ring! We also want to thank everyone for complying with the trailer parking requests! It sure makes our small field much easier to get around! We are bound to have wonderful weather for the August Show!

Thanks for asking all of this and thank you all for coming and supporting our show!
The dinner was for a state of the art digital mammography machine. St. Luke’s Hospital needed about $30,000.00 more for this purchase and sponsorships for the party and the show totaled $11,000.00! so we are on our way to the purchase of this great machine! BRHJA dedicates our efforts to all equestrian mothers. We served over 350 dinners and many more were on the show grounds that did not eat. Sponsors for the event were Verizon for $5000.00, Bank of America and Bill and Roberta Ratterree for $1,000.00, Hendersonville Radiological for $2500.00, Clover Gallery, Maude Carr and an anonymous donor totaled the above amount.
The riders love the large crowds, and the Vick Russell and Lincoln Russell barns were huge supporters bringing many horses to compete. Dinner was “design your own” fajitas and ice cream Sundays- ice cream scoopers were Sally Frick, Ashley Goodlet, Noreen Cothran and lots of other hands who saw that we needed a break! (Tom Furman was the man who rescued Ashley from the rock hard Ice Cream - THANKS!) St Luke’s Foundation members that helped to get this fundraiser together were Carol Jackson and Carol Meske and were on the showgrounds to give awards out. It was a night to remember! I also want to thank Terry Neves for the beautiful flowers that she donated to us for the mother's day leadline class. That class did not go due to the rain, but we ended up selling the flowers at the end of the show and all of those proceeds as well will go the the St. Lukes mammography department. Thank you Terry!

My Friend Sally

Sally Frick is such a nice person and such a great friend! She and I got to be very good friends on the BRHJA board and sharing an office at the Spartanburg Day School. She is off the board this year, but as a breast cancer survior this show is very near and dear to heart. It was her idea to do the Mother's Day Benefit Show last year to benefit the Spartanburg Regional Gibbs Cancer Center Breast Health Program. She made that show happen! She had the contacts at Regional, and I was her helper! She had so much enthusiasm and energy for that show and it was truly special! The Mother's Day Leadline was a hit and so much fun! We ended up donating $8000 to the Gibbs Cancer Center with the help of the Verizon sponsorship! We hope to up that figure and give even more to our local hospital St. Luke's Mammography Department! Anyway - Sally said she would help me decorate for this show even though she is off the board. She bought all of the decorations, plants, and ordered the lapel pins! I did nothing! She and I met at Harmon Field yesterday and decorated up the place in a pink explosion in honor of Mother's Day. We worked for 3 hours and then had a wonderful lunch out in Tryon! It was such a pleasure to be doing it with Sally! She is fun, positive, and a doer! I love doers! So when you see the decorations and you see Sally - tell her how good they look! She also is bringing a huge crowd from her barn, Motlow Creek Equestrian Center, to support this show!

I don't really know who he is, but we found him on a showground recently and asked him if he'd run our shows for us. He agreed, and off he went.

No, seriously folks, Lewis has done an outstanding job for BRHJA. We all had a feeling it was all going well, but after the March show, we have the proof. Through his efforts, not only did the show run rather smoothly, but costs have been very well controlled, and the results are that there is a nice chunk of money left to put back into the future, and a lot of excited exhibitors who want to keep coming back.

And then there's the person who asked him in the first place, Jamie Corn.

So next time you see either of them around town or on the showgrounds, give them a nice thanks, and remember to toast each of them heartily next time you have the opportunity.

2008 Progressive Jumper Division

Hey folks, notice the new division that's been going on! Progressive Jumper Rider. It's exactly the same as the one that PSJ has, 'Fences 2’6” – 2’9” Open to novice riders in their first or second year of showing in the jumpers at 2’6”.' The board voted to add this during the first meeting of the year, but we've just had a time getting all of this put together to get points in order. Chickie has gone back to make sure that all the points are correct, and on the web site points page, we have a link to it.

BRHJA Members and Friends!

We're going to try this blog to see if it can help generate more excitement about BRHJA! If you have a report from an out of town show, in town show, almost anything of interest to all of us, send a post on to us, and we'll add it to the thread or create a new one. You can always send a new post to horseshows@brhja.com or just use the box in the blog body where it says "Post a Comment," and it will be put up by the moderator. Some guidelines:

1. Remember that this is not a bulletin board. Your comment will not show up immediately like it does on the CotH BB.
2. So that means that all comments will be "moderated," yes censored, to make sure that we're keeping it clean and playing nice in the sandbox.
3. When creating your post, it's preferable that you actually create an account so that we know who sent the message, but you can choose to just select "Anonymous" if you wish. If you do use "Anonymous," we ask that you do ID yourself with a name or a regular nickname, so we can know it's a true post. It will also give your comment a greater chance of it getting into the blog!
